Website Redesign SEO Checklist: Plan the Move Before Launch

A website redesign SEO checklist helps you track the pages and customer journeys that need to survive a rebuild. Plan the move before changing URLs, content or navigation.

What should you record before redesigning a website?

Create an inventory of the current pages, their purposes and the actions visitors take on them. Record useful content, incoming links and any available search or enquiry data before deciding what to change.

A redesign brief should name the problem: unclear services, poor mobile navigation, inaccessible forms, slow pages or a brand that has evolved. “Make it look modern” is a visual direction, but it does not explain what the rebuilt website needs to do better.

Group the existing pages into keep, improve, combine and remove decisions. Look carefully at a page before removing it just because its design is old; its information or URL may still be useful to customers.

How should old and new URLs be mapped?

Keep an existing URL when it still represents the same useful page. When a URL must change, map it to the most relevant replacement and have the developer implement an appropriate permanent redirect.

Google’s site-move guidance explains URL mapping, redirects and updating internal references during a move. A new homepage is not automatically a suitable replacement for every retired service or article.

What should be checked on the replacement site?

Check the important content, page titles, canonical URLs, internal links and enquiry paths before launch. Test representative pages on small screens as well as a desktop layout.

For each main service, confirm that a visitor can understand the offer and take the next step. Review image alternatives, headings, keyboard access and the states shown after a form succeeds or fails. Make sure preview-only indexing restrictions are removed from the production pages that should be discoverable.

Our business website launch checklist covers the broader release checks. For the redesign itself, our UI/UX design service can help clarify the journey before development.

What needs attention immediately after launch?

Revisit the old URLs, the new sitemap and the most important customer journeys on the live domain. Use your own Search Console property and site records to watch for indexing problems, broken paths or changes in enquiries.

Keep the migration record accessible to whoever maintains the site. It should show what changed, why a page moved and where a reported problem can be traced. Search engines may take time to process a move, so avoid treating a single day of data as the final outcome.

A redesign can improve the website without guaranteeing a particular ranking. Diagnose a drop using actual affected pages and search data before rewriting the site again.

How can FoxRanger help you plan a redesign?

FoxRanger can scope a website redesign around your existing content, audience and business goals. The page list, URL decisions, features and ongoing support are agreed as part of the project requirements.

Our confirmed work for Brosip and BuzzClub includes development and ongoing technical management; these partnerships are not presented as measured redesign results. Explore website development services or prepare a redesign brief with the current website and the problems you want to solve.
